Reuters) - The number of officially registered refugees in Germany increased by 11 percent in 2018 from 1,017 to 1.3 million, according to the German Federal Statistics Office.
The number of immigrants applying for refugee status increased by 6% to 1.8 million.
Deutsche Welle television said Friday that this figure covers all applicants for refugee status in Germany, including those whose applications have been rejected and awaiting expulsion from the country of more than 190,000 people, mostly from Afghanistan, Iraq and Serbia.
According to the Deutsche Welle report, 20 percent of registered refugees in Germany enjoy an indefinite stay.
In September 2014, German Chancellor Angela Merkel decided to open the country's borders to immigrants and arrived in Germany within a few months hundreds of thousands of people applying for refugee status, leading to an immigration crisis not seen by the old continent as before.
