{International: Al Furat News} North Korean leader Kim Jong-un gathered the main leaders of the (ruling) Labor Party, before the deadline he had granted to Washington expired, according to the official North Korean News Agency, on Sunday.
The party's plenary session, which opened on Saturday, came after Pyongyang made a series of sharp statements in recent weeks, and issued an ultimatum to Washington that expires its deadline in the last days of this year to present a new offer in stalled negotiations on its weapons programs, vowing to offer a "Christmas gift" full of threats.
Kim chaired the party meeting that discussed "a transparent, independent and anti-imperialist stance," according to the official North Korean News Agency.
The agency added that the Labor Party would also discuss "important issues related to state building and national defense."
During this meeting, Pyongyang may announce "significant political change" compared to its previous approach to the United States, said Hong Min, a researcher with the Seoul-based Korean Institute for National Unification.
This plenary session of the party comes after Kim chaired an expanded meeting last week of the Central Military Commission of the ruling Labor Party.
And the official North Korean News Agency reported, last Sunday, that Kim "provided a brief analysis on the complex internal and external situation to strengthen the country's comprehensive armed forces."
She explained that Kim, "the Supreme Leader, has pointed in detail the direction and ways to be preserved" to strengthen the armed forces.
She added that last week's meeting also discussed "important issues for improving national defense in a decisive manner and essential matters for the sustainable development of military capacity for self-defense."
Nuclear negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang have been frozen since the Hanoi summit between US President Donald Trump and Kim, which ended without agreement in February.
And this month, North Korea conducted a new "vital" test at the Suhai satellite launch site, after testing several weapons, some of which were described by Japan as ballistic missiles.

Trump said he hoped the gift North Korea threatened to give at Christmas would be a "vase" and not a new missile test that could spark global tensions over its nuclear program.
