Game Day: Senators @ Devils - Deja vu all over again

Less than a week after the Senators opened the Father's trip with a 3-0 shutout win over the Devils, Ottawa opens another road trip, this time without the Dads and also without at least one and as many as 3 of the players that suited up in that game.

Mike Condon got the shutout in that game last Thursday, but this time it will be Craig Anderson's turn as the duo trade starts. Anderson won his last start, Saturday night in Toronto.

Bobby Ryan will not play after injuring his finger and will be out 3-6 weeks, while the three players who left the game against the Jets and did not return all made the trip (Mark Stone, Mike Hoffman and Tommy Wingels), but the Senators also called up Max McCormick and Casey Bailey so it is unsure exactly what the lineup will look like come game time tonight. Wingels skated at practice this morning and declared himself good to go, but Stone did not participate and Hoffman came on late, but gingerly by all accounts and didn't push it too much. Also, Dion Phaneuf was not present. So, the lineup might be fluid as the day goes on but it looks like a skeleton roster might be forced to take over mantle of the playoff race.

It was nice of the NHL to give the Senators another kick in the groin after the loss to the Jets. Suspending Jacob Trouba for two games after the fact was little consolation, because not only does that not affect the result of the game, but now one of the teams chasing them in the standings, the Leafs, get to play the Jets tonight without Winnipeg having one of their two best defensemen in the lineup. The one positive for the Senators is that despite not returning to the game, Stone "didn't suffer an injury on the play" as per the NHL Department of Player Safety explanation video regarding the Trouba suspension, so apparently after discussion with the Senators medical staff it wasn't as bad as it was feared and he shouldn't be out too long, if he doesn't return tonight.

One side result of Sunday's game is the Guy Boucher might be gunshy to go with 11 forwards and 7 defensemen again for a while because usually the only time you see a bench that barren at the end of a game is the result of a fight night where there were a lot of misconducts. It is not very often you finish a game with 8 forwards.

The Devils are still clinging onto faint playoff hopes, six points back of the Bruins but also with 6 teams to leapfrog so if they don't go on a five or six game winning streak sometime soon they will be running out of racetrack before too long. The Senators are in a battle of their own at the top of the Atlantic, as there are only 5 points separating the top 5 teams, from Montreal two points ahead of Ottawa to Toronto, 3 points back. Florida's first ever sweep of a 5 game road trip has vaulted them right back into the mix, third in the division and two points back of the Senators. The Sens will face the Panthers on Sunday in the third game of this 4 stop road trip.

With the trade deadline a week from tomorrow this is an opportunity for players to solidify their spots in the lineup or showcase themselves for a trade by showing what they can do (not pointing the finger at any 22 year olds in particular).
