Coming home after a disappointing 1-2 road trip, the Senators kick off an important 4 game homestand tonight when they host the St. Louis Blues.

All four of their upcoming opponents (Blues, Islanders, Stars and Sabres) are below them in the standings and they need to use home ice to their advantage. Their record, not to mention their overall level of play, against teams they should beat is not as impressive as when they are playing the upper echelon teams and that has to change.

They don't have many games left against playoff-bound teams, and after this homestand they have just 10 home games left as opposed to 18 on the road.

The Blues vaulted back into a playoff position by virtue of a 2-0 shutout victory over the Flyers in Philadelphia last night, and this will be their 3rd game in 4 nights, another fact that should work to the Senators' advantage.

Carter Hutton made 26 saves for the shutout, after being pulled in his previous start, which followed a shutout. Like the Blues themselves, their goaltending situation has been in disarray of late, and they are one of just 5 teams to allow more than three goals per game over the season.

The Blues have recently expedited Ken Hitchcock's departure, originally scheduled for after the season and moved up Mike Yeo's assumption of the head coaching gig after starting the year as the heir apparent in the succession plan. That was a very rare and unique situation, to bring in the next coach while the current coach is still in place. With the plan in place for his exiting, it was the strictest definition of a lame duck coach, and that could have been a contributing factor to the Blues' struggles.

Vladimir Tarasenko leads the Blues in goals, assists and points (23-27-50) but is a -13, which is pretty much the Blues' season in a nutshell, and to add to that they just lost Robby Fabbri for the season with an ACL injury.

As for the Senators, they have to put the performance in Buffalo out of their minds, as well as the show Robin Lehner put on against them. For the final two periods they carried the play well enough to win that game, but when the chips were down couldn't find a way to beat their former teammate and it resulted in a 4-0 loss that saw Mike Condon pulled early in the third period.

And if the morning skate is any indication, the streak is over for Condon, as Andrew Hammond took the starter's end and may get the start tonight as a return for Craig Anderson looms. Maybe the Senators are trying to showcase Hammond for a potential trade, otherwise he will have to clear waivers again to be sent to the AHL when Anderson does return, or maybe they are giving him one last chance to prove that he does deserve a look as the backup going forward before they decide what they are going to do with pending UFA Condon. I don't know if one game will make someone jump up and take notice of Hammond, but Condon also needs a rest, and by the time Thursday comes around it will have been 5 days since he played in game action so he should be fresh.

Curtis Lazar and Freddie Claesson will be the Ottawa scratches.

Mike Hoffman and Mark Stone each scored twice as the Senators beat the Blues 6-4 in St. Louis on January 17th, and Bobby Ryan might be due for some points as he loves facing the Blues. He scored in that previous game, and he has 18 goals and 32 points in 25 career games against the Blues.
