Qatar complains of the WTO's blockade countries

Arabic and International   Saturday, 05 August 2017

The World Trade Organization (WTO) said it had received a complaint from Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates over the three countries' economic and diplomatic blockade.

Qatar has asked it to hold consultations to settle disputes with the UAE, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia over the measures adopted by the three countries that restricted the movement of goods and services from Qatar, as well as commercial transactions related to intellectual property rights.

In its complaint, Qatar accused the three countries of adopting measures that represented coercive attempts to impose economic isolation.

As Qatar formally asks for consultations with the three countries - the first step in any trade dispute - it gives them 60 days to settle the complaint or face a WTO lawsuit and possible trade sanctions.

Qatar's Ministry of Economy and Commerce announced on July 18 that Qatari and non-Qatari companies in Qatar would sue the blockade countries and claim compensation for losses incurred.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) is one of the three sides of the tripartite tripartite set up by the United Nations in the 1960s to manage international trade and the movement of money in the world, where the United Nations established the International Monetary Fund, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the World Trade Organization.

On June 5, 2017, the three Gulf states - in addition to Egypt - imposed a blockade on Qatar that not only cut off diplomatic relations with Doha but also imposed a land blockade and closed the air and sea areas in violation of commercial rights not only to Qatar but also to Qatar. For their trading partners also.
