[rtl]The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has announced that a draft resolution against Israel will be voted on at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the United Nations, which will begin in Paris within days..[/rtl]
[rtl]"The draft resolution criticizes the policy of the Israeli government in East Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. "[/rtl]
[rtl]"This is the first time since April 2013 that a draft resolution on the Arab-Israeli conflict is not presented at a UNESCO conference or one of its institutions"He said.[/rtl]
[rtl]"The Arab states decided to withdraw the draft resolution after quiet diplomatic contacts between UNESCO Executive Committee Chairman Michael Forbes and Israeli Ambassador Karam Shama Hacohen and Jordanian Ambassador Makram Qaisi," the paper quoted a senior official of the Israeli Foreign Ministry as saying. The United States played a role in these contacts, and its envoy for the peace process, Jason Greenblatt, personally intervened in these contacts, according to the Israeli official"He said.[/rtl]
[rtl]As part of the understanding between the two sides, it was decided that instead of voting on two draft resolutions on East Jerusalem and the situation in occupied Palestine, submitted by the Arab Group under the chairmanship of Jordan and the Palestinian Authority, the Chairman of the UNESCO Executive Committee proposed postponing the vote for half a year.[/rtl]
[rtl]"The increasing opposition of UNESCO member states to the political decisions on Jerusalem convinced Jordanians and other Arab countries that it would be useful to withdraw the draft resolutions at the next conference. The Arab states understand that in every vote their support is reduced and they simply do not want to be insulted"He said.[/rtl]
[rtl]Over the past four years, especially during the last two years, UNESCO has voted on resolutions favoring the Palestinians and criticized the Israeli occupation policy in the occupied Palestinian territories.[/rtl]
