    Baghdad / Sky Press:

US sources have revealed the pressure exerted by Trump for the return of Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri to his country

Reuters quoted US officials and a European diplomat as saying that the Trump administration pressured the Saudis to allow Hariri to return to Beirut after he went to Riyadh on November 4 and announced his resignation without any introductions.

A senior US administration official, unnamed, said: "The US message to Saudi Arabia about Hariri came through statements made by Foreign Secretary Rex Tilerson, and in private conversations between US and Saudi officials."

Among the officials was Thamer al-Sabhan, the Saudi minister of state for Gulf affairs, who recently visited Washington.

"We encouraged the Saudis to say that Hariri's return to Beirut as soon as possible would be beneficial to Lebanon's political stability," the official said.

Hariri arrived in Lebanon on Wednesday, November 22, and announced his resignation in response to President Michel Aoun's request to wait and consult.

The prime minister's return to Lebanon was his first time since he announced his resignation from the Lebanese government on November 4 in a televised address from the Saudi capital Riyadh.
