Ali Akbar Velayati, advisor to Iran's supreme leader Ali Khamenei, said Thursday that "US forces in Syria and Iraq will leave if they want to."

"The Americans are in the region without an official invitation from legitimate governments and they seek to impose hegemony over them," Velayati said in a statement quoted by the Tasnim news agency.

"US forces will leave the region, whether they like it or not," he said. "There is no evidence to justify their presence there."

The Iranian official described the American recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, saying it was "a spark in a storehouse of emotions and the doctrines of the Islamic world."

"Former presidents in America have not dared to move the capital to Jerusalem, and this action needs someone who is not wise in its decisions, and the same person who has done it," he said.
