Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met in Brussels Thursday with his European counterparts who will confirm their support for the nuclear deal ahead of an imminent decision by President Donald Trump on the re-imposition of US sanctions on Tehran.
EU foreign minister Federica Mugherini is keen to separate this file from many other contentious issues with Iran, but Zarif will have to calm the fears of his French, German and British counterparts after recent violence against demonstrators in Iran.

But what is urgent for the Europeans is to re-establish the line to defend the international agreement on Iran's nuclear program, signed in 2015 after a decade of arduous negotiations.

German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said Thursday that the deal "allowed for a severe crisis in the Middle East and is today the cornerstone of global nuclear non-proliferation engineering."

"For us Europeans, neighbors of the region, it is at the heart of our security, so we have to work with our partners to protect and implement it."

"We will continue to urge our friends in the White House not to put it in the trash," British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said in a statement. "This agreement, which prevents Iranians from producing nuclear weapons in exchange for greater economic partnership with the rest of the world, remains beneficial and correct," he said.

"But the nuclear deal makes the world safer and it is essential that we continue to work with our European partners to protect the Iranian agreement as well as the security and prosperity it brings to Iran and the world," he added. C
