Wall Street hits new record highs

US stocks continued to close at new record highs as the fourth-quarter earnings season kicked off with positive bank results and strong retail sales, boosting investor optimism about economic growth.
The Dow Jones industrial average was up 228.46 points, or 0.89 percent, at 25,803.19. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was up 18.68 points, or 0.67 percent, at 2,786.24.
The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 49.29 points, or 0.68 percent, at 7,261.06.
The three indexes ended the week with gains as the Dow Jones rose 2 percent, the S & P 500 gained 1.57 percent and the Nasdaq gained 1.75 percent. Ending / 25
