At least 17 people were killed in a shooting incident at a high school in Parkland, Florida, police said.
Police arrested the suspect, Nicholas Cruz, aged 19, a former student at the same school he was expelled from.
Cruz, who was armed with "several gunpots", started firing outside the school before breaking into it, officials said.
The incident was one of the deadliest shootings since 20 children were killed in a school in Connecticut in 2012.
Sheriff Broward County, Scott Israel, told reporters that Cruz used a gun and opened fire to kill three people outside the school and then entered the building to kill 12 people.
Two people later died after being taken to hospital.
"It's a disaster, there are no words you can describe," Al-Sharif wrote on Twitter.
Dr Ivan Boer of the provincial health department told reporters late on Wednesday that 17 people had been taken to district hospitals.
Earlier Wednesday, a public school in the area published a tug-of-war saying, "The students and teaching staff heard what appeared to be shooting" shortly before the end of the day and the departure of Margoie Stonemann Douglas High School students.
Police and members of the rapid reaction forces began evacuating students from high school in Parkland, an hour north of Miami, and student families and ambulances gathered outside the building.
Cruz was detained after more than an hour after leaving school, police said.
A number of eyewitnesses who were inside the building at the moment of the incident told the media that the fire alarm went off as soon as the shooting began.
Some students said they hid under the seats and behind the closed doors when the sound of bullets went outside.
One student who was evacuated from school told CBS that Miami students initially thought it was just "routine training."
"There was training early this morning, and then we heard the sound of gunfire. Some students did not think it was serious," he said.
"I heard something like a firecracker, and I looked at my friend who asked me if I had heard it," said another student named Billy Fussberg.
I knew immediately, I did not say anything to him, and I rushed to jump over the fence and went directly to the street where our school was located - and when I arrived the special intervention vehicles and police units rushed to the place and helicopters flying over us. "
Video footage showed the evacuation of students from The school was in small groups as police raided the school
and the FBI announced that it had come to the scene to help the local authorities.
American television broadcast pictures of a number of students gathered outside the police station.
One teacher at the school said she hid 19 students in the wardrobe for 40 minutes and that the school had received training to deal with similar situations six weeks ago.
US President Donald Trump has sent a message of condolence to the families of the victims.
Florida Senator Marco Rabio also wrote a second editorial in which he described the shooting as "designed and carried out to inflict maximum loss of life."
"This attack is the 18th shooting incident, at least in the United States this year, which is located in or near school facilities," according to a study by the Evergreen Gun Safety Foundation
, the sixth shooting incident in a school in 2018 that kills And injuring students, according to Advocacy.
Since 2013, there have been 291 shooting incidents in schools in America, an average of about one incident a week
