The United States and South Korea seem to be on the verge of dealing with the North Korean issue. While the former is heading for the "biggest" sanctions on Pyongyang, the latter is preparing for a new round of bilateral talks, possibly a meeting between the leaders of the two neighbors.

The United States, led by Donald Trump, the biggest "package" of sanctions against North Korea, is set to announce pressure to tighten its nuclear and missile programs as South Korea prepares for further talks with North Korean officials.

The tougher sanctions could jeopardize the recent inter-Korean accord amid preparations to create conditions, allowing for a summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and South Korean President Mon Jie-nen.

A US administration official told Reuters that the new sanctions were "the biggest set of sanctions against the North Korean regime" and did not elaborate.

Mike Bens, the US vice president, had hinted at the plan, two weeks ago, during his stopover in Tokyo, before visiting South Korea to attend the opening of the Winter Olympics.

The North Korean leader said he wanted to promote "a climate of reconciliation and warm dialogue" with South Korea after a high-level delegation, including his sister Kim Yu-jong, returned from the Olympic Games.

Kim Jong-un praised South Korea's "good reception" for the official delegation, saying it was "important" to continue the policy of pacification on the Korean Peninsula.

During her visit, Kim Jong-jung gave South Korean President Mon Jai-en an official invitation to visit Pyongyang. But the South Korean president did not immediately accept it, saying "good conditions" should be available for such a visit.

Last year, North Korea conducted dozens of missile tests and conducted its sixth and largest nuclear test ever, defying UN sanctions.

However, more than two months have passed since the latest rocket attacks in late November.
