The Washington ambassador in Geneva and British diplomats denounced the Assad regime as the head of the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva.

"Britain deplores Syria's assumption of the presidency of the Conference on Disarmament, although the regime has consistently and blatantly ignored international agreements and rules on disarmament and nonproliferation," according to a statement issued by British diplomats.

"Monday (May 28th) will be a black day in the history of the CD with Syria starting its four-year term," wrote Robert Wood, the Washington ambassador in Geneva.

"The Damascus regime has no credibility or authority to preside over the conference, and the international community should not be silent," he said.

He called on Russia in a previous tirade to intervene and advised the Assad regime to step down.

The Assad regime is the president of the conference from Switzerland, because Syria comes alphabetically in the list of member states.

A few days ago, a statement issued by the Organization for Threatened Peoples, based in the German city of Goettingen, said that "as long as a representative of the Syrian regime heads this international platform, it must be boycotted."

"It is unreasonable for a government accused of using weapons of mass destruction and responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians to head a UN body and decide who to speak and who does not," the statement said. Dictator and do not allow him to return to the international arena. "

The countries participating in the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva preside over the conference periodically in alphabetical order. To change this rule, there must be a consensus among all the participating countries. The Conference is the only permanent body in the world where the issue of weapons of war is discussed permanently.
