WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US President Donald Trump has agreed to a joint communique issued at the end of the Group of Seven (G-7) summit, accusing Canada of "not being fair."
Trump said other countries were imposing "huge tariffs" on the United States.
The joint statement calls for a "rule-based trading system," despite sharp differences over US-imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.
At a news conference afterwards, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged to respond by imposing tariffs on US goods on July 1.
Trudeau said Trump's "humiliating" move by citing national security concerns was aimed at justifying tariffs on steel and aluminum.
"There will be regret, but it will be clear and unequivocal that we will proceed with a response on July 1," he said. "Canadians are polite and rational but will not manipulate them."
The EU confirmed its commitment to the joint statement despite Trump's decision.
Commenting on his trip to attend his summit in Singapore, Trump said on Twitter he had instructed US officials not to "believe the statement until we look at tariffs on cars."
Trump said that was because of the "wrong remarks" of Trudeau during his press conference, and in fact Canada is imposing huge tariffs on our farms, our workers and our American companies. "
He pointed out that Trudeau was "very misleading and weak."
Trump had earlier signed a joint statement reached by the G7 countries despite the trade dispute between them.
In his Twitter tweets, Trump vowed not to allow "other countries to impose huge tariffs and trade restrictions on US farmers, workers and companies."
The G7 summit, held in the Canadian province of Quebec, dealt with other issues such as relations with Russia.
In the joint statement, the group countries - Canada, the United States, Britain, France, Italy, Japan and Germany - agreed on the need for "free and fair trade" as well as the importance of fighting protectionist policies.
The Group of States said in a statement: "We strive with all our efforts to reduce tariff restrictions as well as non-tariff restrictions and means of support."
Other points of agreement signed:
Russia: A common demand demanded that Moscow "stop its destabilizing behavior." The leaders of the group demanded the Kremlin stop its attempts to "undermine democracy" and withdraw its support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Iran: The Group pledged to ensure that Iran's nuclear program remains peaceful. States have said they are committed to making sure that Iran "never seeks to develop or possess a nuclear weapon."
Climate: The United States has refused to sign a commitment to implement the recommendations of the Paris Convention on Climate Change, after Trump announced that it will withdraw from the agreement in June in the hope of a new deal "fair".
Earlier, President Trump told reporters he had proposed the idea of abolishing tariffs among the group's countries, describing the talks with them as "extremely useful."
He added that "the United States has been exploited for decades and decades," describing them as a money money that everyone continues to steal. "
President Trump said retaliatory tariffs from his allies would be a "mistake" and warned that if it came to a trade war, the United States would "win that war."
Trump left the summit early to travel to Singapore for a historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
On June 1, the United States imposed a 25 percent tariff on steel imports and 10 percent on aluminum imports from the European Union, Canada and Mexico. Trump said the move would protect local producers, who are vital to national security.
But the European Union has introduced counter tariffs on US goods, and Canada and Mexico intend to take similar retaliatory measures.
The G-7 is an annual summit involving Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Japan and Germany, which account for more than 60 percent of world trade.
Economic issues are at the top of the agenda of the summit, although meetings always spur debate on other major global issues.
Russia's membership in the group was suspended in 2014 because of its annexation of the Crimea from Ukraine. On Friday, Trump surprised everyone by calling for Moscow to return to the group, but German Chancellor Angela Merkel said other members opposed the invitation.
