The United States has rejected high-level appeals from the European Union to grant exemptions to European companies from sanctions against Iran.
In a speech to European countries, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that his country rejects these appeals, because it wants to exert maximum pressure on Iran.
The letter added that the exemptions will be granted in the event that they benefit US national security.
The EU fears trade transactions worth billions of dollars could be jeopardized by new US sanctions on Iran.
"We will seek unprecedented financial pressure on the Iranian regime," the US Treasury Secretary said in a statement.
"The United States is in a position that does not allow exceptions to this policy, except in very specific circumstances," he said.
The sanctions were imposed in May after President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the international agreement on Iran's nuclear program.
The US withdrawal means reactivating the sanctions imposed on Iran before signing the deal.
The position of the United States contrasts with the positions of France, Germany and Britain, who have declared their commitment to the agreement.
Some major European companies for investment and trade with Iran, after the nuclear deal went into effect three years ago.
In 2017, EU exports to Iran amounted to about 10.8 billion euros, while imports from Iran amounted to about 10.1 billion euros.
European companies are now fearful of damaging relations with the United States if they continue to trade with Iran.
Earlier this year, however, the EU began reviving legislation that it said would allow its companies to continue business ties with Iran.
The so-called "Prohibition Act" was issued in 1996 to avoid US sanctions against Cuba, but it was never used.
It is expected to do a modern version of that law, before the sixth of August next, the date of activation of the new US sanctions on Iran.
