Oil prices fell on Wednesday after the US Petroleum Institute said US stocks of crude rose last week, defying expectations of a sharp decline.
Brent crude futures were down 31 cents, or 0.4 percent, at $ 71.85 a barrel by 0240 GMT. It rose 32 cents to $ 72.16 a barrel on Tuesday after hitting a three-month low earlier.
US West Texas Intermediate crude futures lost 36 cents, or 0.5 percent, to $ 67.72 a barrel. It was recorded at the settlement in the meeting Tuesday, a rise of two years to 68.08 dollars per barrel, away from the lowest level in about a month.
Brent crude futures and the US dollar were flat after falling sharply on Monday and last week, with the impact of supply disruption in Venezuela, and analysts expected a 3.6 million barrel drop in US inventories in the week ending July 13.
But the specter of increased production returned quickly after the US Petroleum Institute said crude stocks grew 629 thousand barrels to 410.7 million.
Official figures are due to be released from the Department of Energy's Energy Information Administration at 10:30 EDT.
