The Ministry of Agriculture's Technical Undersecretary Mehdi Mohammed Al-Qaisi revealed on Saturday the intention of the ministry to reduce the agricultural areas of the winter season by 50% due to water scarcity, indicating that the harvest season of wheat and barley crops is not good so far.
"The Ministry of Water Resources has informed us of a severe water crisis during the current season and has asked us to reduce the winter agricultural plan by half," Qaisi said in a statement.
He added that "the Ministry of Agriculture will reduce the area of agricultural land from 4 million acres to two million only to prevent the depletion of water to prevent the impact of the crisis on human consumption."
Al-Qaisi added that "the harvest season of wheat and barley is not good because of the coincidence of rainfall with the harvest season, which has affected the quality of the product," stressing that "the Ministry of Commerce will hand over the Ministry of official statistics for the current season and the quantity harvested after the completion of receipt of the crop from Nineveh."
