The former Iranian president and leader of Iran's reformist movement, Mohammad Khatami, warned the regime of collapse or failure if it did not reform, according to statements published by Khatami's official website.

Khatami said during a meeting with a group of Iranian prisoners liberated during the Iran-Iraq war and members of the Association of Culture and Politics at the University of Shiraz, that "Iran needs a new effort, and if the regime does not accept reforms, it will certainly fail," as he put it.

Khatami criticized the conservative attack on the Iranian president's government. "We do not forget that there is a trend that tries to link all the problems in the country to the Iranian government. This is a denunciation of the government's work. Today, in order to preserve the Iranian regime, we must support President Ruhani's government.

"The government that comes through the use of coercive force is not a divine government, even if these governments are the governments of Imam Ali and the true Imam," Khatami indirectly criticized Iranian leader Khamenei. "The desired government is only the government that the people are willing to accept.

Khatami asked about the importance of the people's satisfaction in choosing their rulers, and linking it again with the Shiite imams. "Was our nation trying to form governments without the approval of the people?"

And warned of the danger of mistrust between the regime and the people in Iran, noting that "creating an atmosphere of mistrust between the Iranian people and the regime will create despair, and lose the Iranian people hope for the future, and if this happened then we do not need an external enemy; The people will weaken, and then the regime will face a real danger, "he said.

"We must try to maintain the system itself, and we may fail to make reforms within the system, but we must do our best to do so."
