Iran begins the implementation of the prisoners exchange law with Iraq

    Sunday, 13 January 2013 09:47

    Shafaq
News / The Iranian government announced on Sunday the law of exchanging
prisoners between it and Iraq as it was placed under implementation
after circulating it by the Presidency of the Republic of Iran and
confirmed releasing a number of Iranian prisoners in Iraq during the
visit of the Iranian Justice Minister to Iraq some time ago.

    The
Iranian justice minister, Seyed Mortatha Bakhtiari said in a press
statement that "the law of prisoners’ exchange between Iran and Iraq was
put under implementation after circulating it by the president," noting
that "the Islamic Shura Council approved on 9 of last May a memorandum
of understanding between Iran and Iraq on exchanging prisoners.”

    Bakhtiari
said that "the head of Islamic Shura Council send this law component of
the 20 articles in 26 of last December to the President of the
Republic, where he was informed to the Justice Department on 7 of
current January," and expressed hope that "The implementation of this
Memorandum of Understanding would provide that the prisoners of both
countries would serve their sentences in their respective countries.”

    With
regard to the Iranians prisoners in Iraq, Bakhtiari said “the number of
Iranian prisoners in Iraq wasn’t announced yet, but most of them are
imprisoned for illegal entry to Iraq," stressing that "a number of
Iranian prisoners have been released during his visit a few months ago
    to Iraq”.

The former parliament Speaker, Ayad al-Samarrai met in
Tehran, last year; the Iranian judiciary chief, Sadeq Larijani and
discussed with him the situation of Iraqi and Iranians prisoners in both
countries, recalling the Commission for Human Rights in the Iraqi
parliament that more than 3000 Iraqi detainee are present in Iran,
stressing that "some of them are detained for political consideration
    and others for criminal reasons.”
