The European Union calls on Abdul Mahdi to visit him and show his readiness to support Iraq politically, financially and security
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]The European Union's foreign policy chief, Federica Mughrini, confirmed Friday to Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi that the EU supported Iraq's stance on US sanctions against Iran and its readiness to support Baghdad in dealing with the consequences of those sanctions.
The media office of Abdel Mahdi said in a statement that the latter "received a telephone call from the European Union High Representative for Foreign Policy Federica Mugrini," noting that "she congratulated Adel Abdul Mahdi on the post of Prime Minister and the formation of the government."
"The EU supports the president personally and the government," the statement said, adding that "working with Iraq is an important priority for the European Union."
She added that "the European Union follows with satisfaction the steps of the Prime Minister in forming the government and seek to overcome the quotas in the selection of ministers," stressing that "Iraq and because of history, composition and geography can play an important role in building bridges of cooperation in the region as a whole."
"The EU is ready to support Iraq politically, financially and security, as well as its support for Iraq in its attitude towards the US sanctions against Iran," the EU foreign policy chief said.
Mugrini, according to the statement, "an open invitation to the Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi to visit the European Union."
For his part, Abdul Mahdi presented "an invitation to interview Mughrabi to visit Iraq soon."
The second package of US sanctions on Iran entered into force earlier this month to target the energy sector in particular. Washington's decision came six months after its withdrawal from the international agreement with Iran signed in 2015
The United States allowed several days after the re-imposition of sanctions on the Iranian oil sector to Iraq continued to import natural gas and energy supplies from Iran for 45 days.
