    RODAO, Iraq - 

    Iraqi Oil Minister Thamir al-Ghadhban said on Thursday that his ministry had drawn up a plan to raise oil production from the Kirkuk fields to 1 million bpd. 

    The minister said in statements to the newspaper "morning" Iraqi, "The plan is to promote the production of Kirkuk fields of 400,000 barrels per day at the present time." 

    Baghdad continues its plans to develop its oil fields to boost production as demand for the traditional energy source grows, although its growth has slowed slightly in the past four years. 

    He added: "Iraq is keen to provide oil supplies to consuming countries, and stability of the global market, provided that there is a fair price for producing countries," adding that "the price is now in a better position than it was."

    "We have capabilities to increase production, but we are aware of the importance of market stability. We will not resort to changing our oil policy," he said, reiterating his commitment to what has been agreed with OPEC members and beyond. 

    OPEC +, which is made up of members of the Organization and independent producers, continues to implement a 1.2 million bpd cut in crude production, which began in early 2019 and ends in June. 

    Iraq is OPEC's second largest oil producer after Saudi Arabia, producing 4.5 million bpd, and recently announced its capacity to increase production to 6 million "immediately."
