The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and foreign security agencies have warned friends and colleagues of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi that their efforts to continue his pro-democracy work have made them and their families targets for possible Saudi revenge, according to security sources and individuals who have valued these Threats.
Among the people warned by the CIA over the past weeks are three Democratic defenders, Palestinian activist Iyad al-Baghdadi, a resident of Norway, and Saudi-based Saudi opposition Omar Abdel Aziz, as well as another US resident who asked not to be identified.
The three human rights activists were working closely with Khashoggi on politically sensitive media and rights projects while he was assassinated at his consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.
Al-Baghdadi told Time magazine that he had been instructed to take preventive measures that would make it difficult to penetrate their electronic devices so that no information would be used to be used against them. This happened with rights activist Omar Abdel Aziz, who sued an Israeli company that sells malicious software to penetrate mobile phones.
Time said tips were given to them to avoid traveling to a number of European and Asian countries where Saudi Arabia had special influence and to transfer their family members from these countries.
The three jurists said they were targeted because their criticism of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was effective and accused him of ordering Khashoggi's death as part of a broader campaign of repression against Saudi dissidents around the world.
