Erbil (Kurdistan 24) - The United States sent 1,500 troops to the Middle East in a move it said was aimed at strengthening defenses against Iran.
Washington took the decision after accusing Iran's Revolutionary Guards of direct responsibility for the attack on tankers off the UAE coast this month.
    Protection
"We want to provide protection in the Middle East, we will send a relatively small number of soldiers, most of them to provide protection," US President Donald Trump said as he left the White House for a visit to Japan.
Soldiers include groups to manage missile defense systems, air control, and engineers to strengthen defenses.
Concerned about avoiding escalation with Iran amid heightened tensions, Pentagon officials stressed in a press briefing on the defense nature of the Forces nouvelles, noting that none would be sent to hot spots like Iraq or Syria, Reuters reported.
    Iranian response
Iranian media quoted Foreign Minister Mohammad Jawad Zarif as saying US reinforcements in the Middle East were "a threat to international peace."
In the meantime, an Iranian military official threatened to sink US warships in the Arabian Gulf using "secret weapons".
"Iran can send America's warships to the seabed with its crews and aircraft using secret weapons," Murtaza Qurbani, adviser to the Iranian military command, was quoted as saying by Mezan News Agency.
"I think rational Americans and experienced military leaders will not allow American radicals to start a war," Qurbani said.
    Attacking tankers
Admiral Michael Gilday, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, described US information on a new Iranian "campaign" using old tactics stretching from Iraq to Yemen and into the waters of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital sea corridor for world oil trade.
Gildai accused the Iranian Revolutionary Guards of being directly responsible for attacks on oil tankers off the UAE this month in a sign of what might be the end of ongoing investigations into the incident.
"We attribute the attack on navigation in Fujairah to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards," Gildai said, adding that the Pentagon had concluded that the adhesive mines used in the attack belonged to the Revolutionary Guards.
    The position of Iraq
Politicians and leaders of Shi'ite militant groups have called for calm, while the Iraqi government is trying to position itself as the mediator between the two sides.
He said security analyst Hisham al-Hashemi that the Iraqi government succeeded in "favoring the interest of the Iraqi people on the interests of Iran and America." He said it was "good" to use diplomacy to deal with both sides.
He pointed out that Iraq adopted the position of neutrality "in the manner of neutrality in the Sultanate of Oman and Switzerland, and prepare for alternative plans, and with this positive neutrality, we can resist the idea of political subordination to Iran."
    Protest denounces war
Yesterday, Baghdad and other areas saw protests building a call from prominent Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, who urged Iraqis to stay away from any conflict between Iran and the United States.
The protesters chanted anti-war slogans in Baghdad and Basra and expressed concern that their country would be embroiled in any escalation of tension between the United States and Iran.
Iraqi security sources said US intelligence had shown that armed groups were deploying missiles near bases with US troops.
The Iraqi government says it wants to help ease tensions by sending delegations to Washington and Tehran, which say they do not want war, but security officials and analysts warn that any minor incident could spark the battle in the already volatile region.
