(Reuters) - Foreign Secretary Mike Pompeo has not yet decided to extend a 90-day exemption from the sanctions on electricity Iraq buys from Iran, a State Department spokeswoman said.
The State Department said on March 20 it would allow Iraq to continue to buy electricity from Iran for another 90 days without sanctions, but urged Baghdad to find alternative sources of energy.
She informed the spokeswoman Morgan Oortajus journalists , " the minister did not take a decision in this regard."
The American President Donald Trump has taken a decision last year to withdraw from the Iranian nuclear deal, and re - sanctions imposed on the state of Iran, giving some countries temporary exemptions from those decisions.
US sanctions on Iran's oil sector have been in force since November 4.
Iraq had a temporary exemption from the United States allowing it to import gas from Iran.
