, the US Treasury plans to extend the exemption granted to Iraq from the sanctions imposed on the import of gas and electricity from Iran, according to newspaper reports.
And the transfer of the Iranian newspaper, “The Economy” website, from the American Wall Street Journal, that the American administration plans to extend Iraq’s exemption from the ban on importing gas and electricity from Iran.
Informed sources indicated that "the American move comes at a time when Washington and Baghdad are trying to ease tensions after a few weeks of escalation between Iran and the United States."
The United States announced last October that Iraq would be allowed to import gas and electricity from Iran for a period of 120 days, ending next week.
The Wall Street Journal said there are some differences within the administration of President Donald Trump about these permits.
She explained that “some American officials suggested that, in light of the recent tension between the two countries, it is better to extend Iraq’s exemption from the embargo on Iranian gas.”
The newspaper quoted an American official familiar with the Iranian file in this field as saying: "We want to keep pressure on Iran, but this should not be at the expense of destabilizing the economic stability of its neighbors."
For his part, an Iraqi official told the Wall Street Journal, "American officials threatened Baghdad that the United States might reconsider its decision to extend the exemption of the embargo if American forces were harmed by possible attacks in Iraq."
Iraq imports about 28 million cubic meters of natural gas from Tehran to its factories, and it also buys 1,300 megawatts of Iranian electricity to fill the deficit in electrical energy. End / 29 s
