The agreement is an economic victory for Trump
The office of US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer announced Friday that the new free trade agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada will enter into force on July 1.
The new treaty that replaces the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) covers about half a billion consumers in one market.
The Office of the Trade Representative added that the entry into force of the agreement "marks the beginning of a new historical chapter for trade in North America."
"The crisis and recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic demonstrate that the United States must now, more than ever, seek to increase manufacturing capacity and investment in North America," Lighthiser said, stressing that the agreement is "a major step in this regard."
