An official Iraqi delegation to Tehran to discuss the gas and debt file

The Ministry of Electricity revealed that Minister Majid Hantoush will discuss in the Iranian capital Tehran next week the gas file, in addition to the Iranian debts owed by Iraq, which amount to $ 4 billion.
"The Minister of Electricity, Majid Hantoush, will head next week at the head of a ministerial delegation to Iran, to discuss with officials there regarding cooperation and coordination between the two sides in the field of electricity," ministry spokesman Ahmed Al-Abadi said in press statements.
"The Iraqi ministerial delegation in Tehran will discuss with Iranian officials the issue of stabilizing Iranian gas supplies prepared for production plants in Iraq, with the approaching summer season, and everyone is notified that the electricity file in Iraq has become a ruling and vital file," Al-Abadi said.
He added, "Iran is currently exporting 20 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, and this quantity does not meet Iraq's need to operate the power stations that depend on gas, whose actual need during the summer reaches 70 million standard cubic feet per day"
He emphasized that "the Minister of Electricity will also discuss the file of debts owed to Iran by Iraq, which amount to about $ 4 billion."
Although Iraq is a country with oil, it relies heavily on Iran for energy, as it imports a third of its consumption needs of gas and electricity; This is due to its outdated infrastructure that makes it unable to achieve self-sufficiency in energy to meet the needs of its population of 40 million.
The end of the US extension
Last January, the United States extended the exemption granted to Iraq from sanctions imposed on Iran in the energy field, which allowed Baghdad to continue importing gas and electricity from Tehran until this April.
Since the United States re-imposed sanctions on Iran at the end of 2018, the US administration has been granting Iraq one exemption after another, pending finding other suppliers.
