Officials in Iraq revealed this week that an oil project was being built with funding from Japan.

Farhan Fartousi, general manager of the General Company for Ports in Iraq, which is a government company responsible for southern ports in Iraq, said in a statement to the Associated Press, followed by Nass, (May 29, 2021), that “the construction work inside the port of Khair Al-Zubair - The main facility for exporting and importing fuel in Iraq - is more than 70% complete and should be completed this year. "
This project represents the latest project undertaken by port officials and investors to modernize the port and increase revenues in the wake of government plans announced last year to crack down on border corruption that drains state revenues significantly.
Iraq's two major commercial ports - Umm Qasr and Khor Al Zubair - have come under scrutiny amid anti-corruption measures to tackle widespread graft.
Al-Fartousi said that Khor Al-Zubair, "now brings in 10 billion Iraqi dinars per month (about 6.8 million dollars), which is a big jump from 8 billion Iraqi dinars in the previous month of this year (about 5.4 million dollars)."
He also indicated that "the new platform is financed by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency and will be equipped with modern equipment and rapid pumping and unloading operations that will enable the entry of more ships."
He explained, "It will be a private oil berth with all modern additions," including a pumping station capable of withstanding high pressures.
Meanwhile, Haider Fakher, director of Khair Al-Zubair Port, said that construction work is underway around the clock to complete the berth.
