Iraq's water storage reaches critical stages

Iraq's water storage has reached critical stages as a result of the continuous consumption of the past agricultural seasons since the storage was achieved in 2019, which amounted to 40 billion cubic meters at the time, as the highest rate of water storage achieved in Iraq in a quarter of a century.
Advisor at the Ministry of Water Resources, Aoun Diab Abdullah, said in statements followed by (Al-Mada), that "the water storage in the dams has reached critical conditions due to the consumption of large quantities of water in the summer, as the ministry relies on rainfall during the winter."
Theyab did not clarify the remaining amount of water reserves in Iraq out of 40 billion cubic meters, and how much of it was consumed by Iraq.
He added, "Water imports from Turkey are the basis, as its contribution to the Tigris River reaches 40%, while Iran's contribution is 18%, and it has a significant impact in the eastern cities of the country, especially Diyala, which does not have alternative water sources, while compensating the rest of the shares. The river is from within the country.
And he indicated that "Turkey recently agreed to give Iraq a fair and reasonable share of water within a protocol approved by the Turkish Parliament and the President of the Republic of Turkey, and adopted as a document that rises to the subject of the agreement."
Abdullah pointed out that “the last meeting between the Minister of Water Resources and the representative of the Turkish president, former Minister Faysaloglu, witnessed an agreement to postpone the construction of the (Al-Jarzeh) dam until negotiations are conducted between the two sides to reach a satisfactory formula for both parties regarding water releases, and this matter came in response to Iraq’s request. “.
He explained that "Iraq's reservations about the construction of the (Al-Jarzeh) dam depend on two factors, the first of which is the lack of water imports and the other is the quality of water. It needs abundant amounts of water to be consumed for agricultural purposes and have a negative impact, because the water quotas will not reach enough to Iraq, unlike the Ilisu Dam, which needs to release large quantities of water to produce electric power in the summer and winter seasons.
Abdullah stated that "there is another reservation about the (Al-Jazira) dam, which is that the water used through agricultural operations is sewage water, and there is no outlet for its discharge except the Tigris River, and therefore the polluted water will come to Iraqi lands, and it works to change the quality of the water entering Iraq."
For his part, Minister of Water Resources Mahdi Al-Hamdani said during his visit to the Mosul Dam and his participation in the (APSO) conference for the safety of dams that “the ministry is working on issuing a law regarding the safety of dams due to the importance of these vital facilities in securing the country’s water need.”
He continued by saying: "We are confident that the brothers in Turkey and neighboring countries will have a fair distribution of water," reassuring at the same time, "the residents of Nineveh Governorate are safe from the safety of the Mosul Dam in all respects."
