The Ministry of Interior reported the increasing danger of drugs to the Iraqi society, pointing out that about 8000 accused of drug abuse and trafficking were arrested during the past year, while it talked about the seizure of nearly 500 kilograms of narcotics during the same period.
Major General Mazen Kamel, Director-General of Combating Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances, said in a television interview followed by (Al-Mada), that "the Ministry of Interior has provided many activities to reduce the crime of drug abuse and trafficking in Iraq."
Kamel added that "the security forces arrested 7,500 people accused of these crimes during the past year, with less than 400 kilograms of all kinds of drugs seized."
He pointed out that "the percentages have increased during the current year," noting that "the number of detainees in these crimes has reached more than 11,700 accused so far, with more than 480 kilograms seized, including various types of narcotic substances."
Kamel explained, “The indicator we have, according to the investigative data, shows that the transport of narcotic substances is via wheels that contain places to hide them in an attempt not to be detected by the checkpoints,” stressing that “the competent security forces have diagnosed these places and can monitor them directly.”
Kamel explained, "The Ministry of Interior relies on competent officers and affiliates who deal with crime according to the information received quickly."
And he added, "The continuous follow-up has led us to many gangs in coordination with our sources of information in the different governorates."
Kamel spoke about “coordination that took place between the Maysan Police Directorate and Dhi Qar, which led to the follow-up of one of the people who transported narcotic substances, and he was arrested with 11 kilograms.”
He stated, "The technical effort during the past days led to the seizure of 18 kilograms of narcotic substances in a number of security activities in different regions of Iraq."
Kamel stressed that "the work is not only focused on seizing narcotic substances, but the effort also includes arresting the accused, whether they are using or trading."
And he continues, "The continuous meetings we hold with the Kurdistan region have resulted in the creation of a point of contact between the two parties, and this led us to the arrest of some of the accused present in the region, and they were handed over to the federal authorities for trial."
And Kamel concluded, “The ministry emphasizes societal awareness to curb criminal phenomena, including drugs, and the media has an important role in this aspect, as well as civil society organizations, as well as the case for the family’s follow-up of its members in order not to engage in such acts.”
It is noteworthy that the Ministry of Interior confirmed earlier that great efforts are being made in order to confront the drug phenomenon on two axes, the first is to support the staff specialized in combating crime, and the second is the educational tasks in cooperation with the relevant authorities to warn of the danger of using these dangerous substances.
