Baghdad/ Firas Adnan
More than 100 deputies tend not to participate in the next government, and to form an opposition that is expected to be strong and able to carry out its constitutional duties related to evaluating executive performance and diagnosing and correcting mistakes.
Some who wish to join this wing say that their work will not obstruct the government, but rather that it aims to monitor, without relying on the street or threatening peace and security, or the use of uncontrolled weapons.
Member of Al-Hikma Movement, Karam Al-Khazali, said in a statement to Al-Mada that "about 100 MPs from various political blocs, including Al-Hikma, are moving towards not participating in the government and relying on the opposition."
Khazali added, "The presence of this large number of representatives in the opposition would create a kind of balance with the forces forming the government, and with this approach, we will move a step forward in implementing the correct democratic system."
He pointed out, "What we are looking for is the presence of a strong, disciplined opposition that operates in accordance with legal frameworks that can control the scene and perform its supervisory role in the correct manner."
Khazali explained, “Our failure to participate in the government does not mean that we are against the political process. On the contrary, being in the opposition is a healthy condition, and the proper application of democracy is that the first wings are loyal and the other is in the opposition.”
And he refuses, “that the opposition’s work be done by threatening or threatening civil peace or uncontrolled weapons, but through the supervisory role and follow-up to the executive performance and a proper application of the constitutional tasks of the House of Representatives.”
Khazali believes, "When this task is properly implemented, it helps to diagnose mistakes and then treat them, not to leave the government without supervision or accountability, and to abandon the policy of courtesies."
He stressed, "Our role will not obstruct the next government, not on the contrary, but we correct mistakes if they are resolved through the tasks assigned to the representatives."
Khazali said, "The current position is that we are not part of the government and will not be in its formation, and that our desire to resort to the opposition may be present and we are waiting for the final decision on it."
He finds, "The number of those who want to resort to the parliamentary opposition is increasing and may exceed one hundred in the coming days, and it may include influential and important blocs to this opposition."
Khazali noted that “the movement of wisdom to resort to the opposition is not a new experience, but it was in the same position with the government of Adel Abdul-Mahdi, and the goal was to diagnose mistakes, and we did not have armed positions or dependence on the street, and we did not resort to violating the law.”
He continues, "The mistake we made during the past experience is that everyone is involved in the government, and everyone opposes it and criticizes its work, and this is something we do not want to repeat at this stage."
Khazali added, "Resolving the final position is awaiting the approval of the election results, after which each bloc will determine its options, either by participating in the government or resorting to the opposition, but the clear position for us is that 100 or more MPs do not want to be part of the next government."
Al-Khazali went on to say, “The majority project is the best for managing the state, and we have called for it a long time ago, and we hope today to implement it correctly, and this will only happen by forming two strong, equal blocs, the first running the state and the other monitoring, diagnosing and correcting mistakes and working in that according to the public interest.” .
For his part, former MP Yonadam Kanna said, in a statement to (Al-Mada), that "preserving consociationalism and the absence of a strong and influential opposition bloc means that we will not leave the quotas that dominated the political scene for the past period."
Kanna continued, "The presence of a strong opposition is a healthy condition, and is consistent with the development in democratic work, because we want to correct the mistakes that have resulted during the past years with major problems related to the exacerbation of corruption and the deterioration of the service reality."
And he stated, "When the Iraqis went out in the October demonstrations and changed the electoral laws and replaced the government, the purpose of that was to correct the path and not return to the same previous mechanisms."
Kanna stressed that "the majority project is awaited by all Iraqis, and we support this approach, that we have a strong opposition capable of carrying out its tasks."
And he added, "The two wings of the government and the opposition will be in a constant race to win the love of the Iraqi street, and therefore they will work according to the public interest, because both wings have elections that they want to win."
And Kanna concluded, "The street hopes that the desire to turn some political forces and blocs into the opposition is serious, and its purpose is not to bargain in order to obtain positions."
Prior to that, the Emtlad movement, one of the forces emanating from the October uprising, had revealed the imminent formation of a coalition of 50 deputies, who would be present in the opposition and refuse to negotiate and dialogue with the blocs, which he described as traditional.
