Price said the United States would accept new files for refugees who worked with American forces
On Tuesday, the US State Department announced the restart of the Direct Access Program for Iraqis associated with the United States (the Refugee Admissions Program in America), or what is known as the “Iraq P-2 Program.”
"The United States is committed to ensuring that those who have sacrificed their safety for our interests have the opportunity to seek refuge in the United States," a statement issued by Department of State spokesperson Ned Price said. This includes Iraqis who served alongside members of US forces.
"After extensive review, we have resumed processing the cases of a select number of Iraqi P-2 cases that were previously suspended during our review of the program," the statement said.
He continued, "In coordination with the Department of Homeland Security, we will continue to review and address all other existing P-2 Iraqi cases that can move forward as well as accept new applications for the program."
He added: “We have identified and analyzed the issues that led to our suspension of the program in January 2021, and we are committed to ensuring that only loyal and qualified Iraqis who have supported US efforts in Iraq are considered in this important humanitarian program.
All refugees are subject to the highest level of security screening and scrutiny, according to the statement, including extensive interviews and biometric screening.
"In terms of refugee admissions to the United States, the safety and security of the American people is our highest standard," the statement added.
