The House of Representatives called on the government to exempt customs and taxes on foodstuffs and vegetables for a period of two months, while Basra governorate is witnessing today, Saturday, protests calling for opening the import of materials that are not produced locally and facilitating the promotion of customs transactions, similar to the Kurdistan Region, which decided to extend the abolition of duties on imported goods. And I reviewed a document issued by the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hakim Al-Zamili, in which he stated, “We demand that scarce goods, including foodstuffs, vegetables and fruits, be exempted from customs tariffs and taxes for a period of two months, and that the import permit is not required until the goods enter,” and added that “some relevant government departments practice delays in Completing the broken transactions and routine that are tainted by suspicion of extortion and bribery. At the same time, MP Muhammad Shia Al-Sawadni called for popular pressure to push the government towards signing a strategic partnership agreement with China and the completion of the Faw port.
Today, Saturday, a mass demonstration will take place in Basra, to demand the reopening of the import of foodstuffs that are not produced locally in good abundance. The Coordinating Committee for the Demonstrations said that (the most prominent demands of today’s protests are to check the sonar device only and open the import of foodstuffs without specifying a date and the graduation of completed goods at all times, as well as facilitating the promotion of customs transactions and exempting them from tax fees as in the region).
The control departments in Salah al-Din and Wasit have taken measures to limit the rise in prices in the local markets. In the region, the government decided to send a higher committee to Baghdad to discuss strengthening coordination in the field of oil and energy.
