UNITAD confirms its continued support for the Iraqi authorities to hold ISIS accountable
Shafaq News/ The international investigation team concerned with strengthening the accountability of the terrorist organization ISIS, UNITAD, confirmed on Wednesday its continued support for the Iraqi authorities to hold the organization accountable.
This came during a meeting with Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein, Christian Richard, the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the head of the international investigation team on strengthening the accountability of the terrorist organization ISIS, UNITAD, and the delegation accompanying him.
The meeting discussed, according to a ministry statement received by Shafaq News Agency, "the developments of the international team's work in Iraq and the issue of extending the mandate of the international team, and discussing mechanisms to facilitate its mission in accordance with its mandate under Security Council Resolution 2379 of 2017, in a way that supports the capabilities of the competent Iraqi authorities in the field of investigation and identification of the crimes committed." by the terrorist organization, and during the meeting, the tasks entrusted to the international team to support local efforts aimed at holding the terrorist organization to account were reviewed.
Minister Hussein valued the efforts of the international team’s work, stressing “the importance of continuing communication and coordination with the relevant Iraqi authorities, in a way that contributes to facilitating and implementing its tasks and fulfilling its mandate based on the team’s competencies, and in full respect for Iraq’s sovereignty and jurisdiction over crimes committed in its territory.”
For his part, Christian Richard stressed the continuation of the international team to intensify communication and coordination with the competent Iraqi authorities to implement its programs of supporting local authorities to hold ISIS terrorist organization accountable, capacity building and the use of advanced technology in evidence preservation and archiving, praising at the same time the efforts made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. And the various Iraqi institutions in facilitating the tasks of the international team and the success of its mission.
