Yesterday, Monday, the Minister of Communications, Arkan Al-Shaibani, revealed the opening of the International Internet Access Gates project, indicating that the project will reduce smuggling and piracy operations and achieve additional funds for the telecommunications sector.
Al-Shaibani said in a press conference held at the ministry's headquarters and followed by (Al-Mada), that "the ministry announces the opening of the project of international access gates to the Internet."
He added, "This project is strategic and important for the communications sector in Iraq, and it will limit smuggling and piracy operations, and it is an important project that was supposed to be implemented since 2007."
Al-Shaibani pointed out that "Iraq was at the bottom of the world's countries in the Internet and the only one does not have a regular access gate, but after we contracted with major international companies, it established these systems in all border areas."
He stressed, "The project is organizational and will bring additional funds to the telecommunications sector. In a short period of time, we have achieved an improvement in the speed of the Internet from 138th Iraq's ranking globally."
Al-Shaibani noted that "Iraq is currently ranked 42, which means we have advanced 96 ranks, which is a qualitative leap in the telecommunications sector."
He talked about "achieving significant revenues by returning 134 billion dinars to the Ministry of Finance, 10 billion dinars to Dhi Qar Governorate, and 5 billion dinars to Najaf."
Al-Shaibani stressed, "The access gates fight smuggling, reduce piracy, monitor dpi, and control the apparent chaos in social networking sites, pages and fake sites, as well as achieve greater benefit in ensuring large financial revenues."
Al-Shaibani stated, "The speed of the Internet is, of course, different between companies, as it reaches from 100-150 (megawatts), and this is what made Iraq's ranking 42nd in the world."
And he expected, that Iraq's classification would be on the rank of the first 20 countries in the world, after operating (Viber to Home) and entering the implementation phase within six months to a year.
Al-Shaibani continues, “The project is not only for Internet service, but it controls and develops all content in general (Netflix and Showtime) and everything the Iraqi citizen needs at the price of the Internet service itself.”
He explained, "Citizens' data is fully secured because Iraq did not have international access gates and there were no ports or border points for the Internet and capacities."
Al-Shaibani pointed out that "all content today is under control, and we also have a project with the security authorities in its final stages that will be implemented soon."
For his part, the director of Al-Wasat Communications Company executing the project, Mazen Ali Hassouni, said during the conference that "the international access gates project for the Internet will contribute to building the nation."
Hassouni continued, "The telecommunications sector is important and more vital and represents an artery for other sectors," stressing that "the percentage of profits in the telecommunications sector is constantly increasing."
He pointed out that "the Internet sector in Iraq is an integrated and modern project to control capacities through telecommunications infrastructure, from international providers to local providers."
And Hassouni added, "The Internet portals project covers all Iraqi governorates, with major sites for operation and a limit of capacities."
Hassouni concluded, "The project will control the capacity of the Internet and limit any illegal operation while providing high Internet capacities."
