    Economy News-Baghdad
Drought-affected countries, led by Senegal and Spain, announced an alliance on Monday to help each other overcome water scarcity by sharing technology and expertise.
The announcement came on the sidelines of the United Nations Climate Conference COP27, hosted by the sunny Egyptian resort of Sharm El Sheikh, after the failure of the rainy season in the Horn of Africa for the fifth time in a row.
And meteorologists warned that the lack of rain for the sixth season next year is likely to continue, in a precedent that has not occurred before.
"Science tells us we will face more droughts. We need to prepare for the next dry season," said Andrea Meza, Deputy Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.
The frequency of droughts has increased by 29 percent globally since 2000, the UN agency said, as rising temperatures exacerbate the impact of deforestation and land mismanagement that dry out previously cool regions.
Climate scientists say droughts will become more severe and more frequent in the coming years. It will also last longer as global warming disrupts weather patterns.
A report published by environmental engineering consultancy GHD in August said weather disruptions, including droughts, high winds and torrential rains, would cost the global economy about $5.6 trillion by 2050.
Mesa said no country is immune to drought and that the people most affected cannot ultimately produce food, electricity or trade as rivers dry up, disrupting transportation.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez Castejón said in a statement that the coalition would seek to mobilize resources to combat the drought wherever it occurred, but did not give any details on how much money might be made available for that.
