The Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission revealed today, Wednesday, that the next year 2023 will witness the launch of the “electro-electric” plant project, indicating that it will cover 25% of Iraq’s electricity need.
"In 2023, we will launch the nuclear power plant project, which is under implementation with joint cooperation between the Iraqi Atomic Energy Agency and the Ministry of Electricity," said Aqil Mariush Jari, head of the Iraqi Atomic Energy Agency and the national liaison officer with the International Atomic Energy Agency, in an interview with the official agency.
And he indicated that “this project will cover a large part of Iraq’s need to produce electricity with clean energy, as it is hoped that if these reactors are established, they will cover 25% of Iraq’s need for electric energy,” noting that “nuclear energy has a high cost of establishment and its management requires the presence of expert and trained bodies.” .
He explained that "the authority has a work program with the International Atomic Energy Agency that includes training programs for cadres to work on research reactors, and this project started with the number called (ERQ 1014) and part of its activities are in Vienna and the other part is in Jordan."
And (Jari) added that “five areas were chosen to establish stations, including in southern and central Iraq,” noting that “these stations have privacy and must be close to water sources, and far from the line of earthquakes, floods and other threats, and all of this is taken into account in the matter of establishing These stations are not only in Iraq, and this is one of the basic terms for establishing any nuclear power station.”
