    On Thursday, the Ministry of Agriculture expected that the total amount of wheat produced locally for the current year would reach five to six million tons, which would enable Iraq to be self-sufficient in the strategic crop, revealing that the area of ​​the current winter plan has reached 13 million dunams.
    The ministry's advisor, Mahdi Damad Al-Qaisi, said in a statement to the official press, seen by Al-Iqtisad News, that "the total area of ​​the winter plan, after the current wave of rains, exceeded 13 million dunums, and includes crops of wheat, barley, and vegetables. Two million and 500 thousand dunums for the wheat crop, in addition to an area similar to the cultivation of strategic crops irrigated with surface water, while the area irrigated with groundwater is three million and 500 thousand dunums.
    Al-Qaisi expressed his hope that "Iraq's production of wheat for the current season, according to the prepared plan, will reach between five to six million tons, which he confirmed is sufficient to secure the country's full needs of the crop, and thus stop importing foreign wheat and provide hard currency for the state treasury," revealing “The ministry’s endeavors, after approving the 2023 budget, to implement an agricultural development program that depends on two directions. The first is to provide support to farmers, which includes seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, vaccines, and treatments. As for the second axis, it includes the implementation of the ministry’s stalled projects.”
    He referred to "the ministry's efforts during the current year to increase the area of ​​cultivation of vegetable crops, which currently amounts to more than 200 thousand dunums, by adding an area of ​​150 thousand dunums to it, so that the total area becomes 350 thousand dunums, which will be close to the area allocated last year and amounted to 340 thousand dunums, which will enable Covering the country's need for these crops for daily consumption and the possibility of entering the food industry, with continued government support to farmers with supplies, agricultural mechanization, irrigation pumps and its regulated systems.
