UNESCO proposes a fund for emergency support in the education sector

The United Nations Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (UNESCO) put forward a proposal to establish an emergency fund for the education sector in Iraq.
The project coordinator in the Education Department of the UNESCO office in Iraq, Bilal Al-Hamaydah, said in an interview with "Al-Sabah": "The many problems that education in Iraq went through, such as armed conflicts and economic and political conditions, affected it negatively during the past 20 years," adding that "one of the The most important challenge monitored by UNESCO, UNICEF and the European Union is the presence of about 2 million children out of school, although this number has decreased over the past three years, but it still constitutes a large percentage.
He attributed the reasons for the increase in numbers to "displacement and poverty, which forced the students to support their families and leave school. They are divided into 400,000 students in the primary stage, 600,000 students in the intermediate stage, and one million students in the preparatory stage," noting that "there is another problem represented by poor infrastructure." Infrastructure is the foundation and pillar of the educational process, and we are talking here about 50% of those destroyed structures in the provinces of Anbar, Salahuddin and Nineveh.
Al-Hamaida pointed out that "UNESCO has identified the current government's priority in the education sector as part of its programme," noting that "if there is a strategy to advance education, this constitutes a clear governmental commitment to budgets and financial allocations that must go primarily and directly to infrastructure."
He explained that "the quality of education is an essential part that faces the world and cannot be isolated. The curricula, the competence of teachers, laboratories and the devices necessary to keep pace with modernity, which we see as a new knowledge revolution, are also a priority," noting that "Iraq is facing a challenge in the rise of illiteracy among the elderly who have passed the stage of education, What requires an infrastructure and a staffing that is able to deal properly and bring them back to the ranks.”
Al-Hamayda suggested, "Establishing a fund to support the education sector in Iraq to respond to emergencies related to infrastructure, train teachers, build about 8 thousand schools, and return two million students and students to school, similar to the experiences of countries in the world that were able to get out of crises, especially in areas where children were exposed to great psychological trauma,” considering that the success of this process “also depends on partnerships with parents, civil society organizations, committees, local governments, international organizations, and donors.”
