Al-Sudani: There are those who used power for partisan and personal purposes
Yesterday, Monday, Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani reviewed the “imperfect conditions” that the country went through before and after 2003, and at the same time acknowledged the existence of a decline in the economy, education, services, mismanagement, and the exacerbation of corruption.
Al-Sudani said in an interview with Al-Jazeera, “We lived through painful images of absurd wars, killing and displacement before 2003, after which we were blessed with a new constitution that established rights and duties, but another chapter began, which is terrorism and systematic sectarian killing.”
He added, "We were facing daily painful situations in the streets and markets, which left its mark on the ISIS circle, which took control of large areas of Iraq," explaining, "During that period, a lot was accomplished, but it was expected that more would be accomplished than what happened."
Al-Sudani also said, "There has been a decline in the economy, education and services, and it was supposed to provide what is better, and we acknowledge the existence of mismanagement and the exacerbation of the phenomenon of corruption."
He continued, "In the 2018 elections, there was reluctance, and in 2019, the October demonstrations took place, and in 2021, we also witnessed reluctance to participate in the elections, and these are messages we received."
He pointed out that “there are those who caused corruption, were in power, and used the position for partisan and personal purposes, but when we talk about a country that went through these violent tremors, the conditions are not ideal.”
He pointed out that "there are those who took a patriotic stance and preserved public money, and in numbers a lot has been achieved in every village, governorate and city, and the situation has changed."
And he stressed that "the prime minister should be an Iraqi from within, people would understand that he is close to them and he lived with them the years of ordeal, and this does not mean that the brothers who came from abroad were far from the citizen, but rather by virtue of the nature of life and the situation, they may not have succeeded in arranging priorities."
Al-Sudani stated, “When I assumed the presidency of the Accountability and Justice Commission, I dealt with it in a purely professional manner, and I applied the law to the fullest.”
And he continued, “When we say that the parties meet to form a coalition government, this is a natural right, and as for whoever comes with a desire to control the joints of the ministry, then the agent, the advisor, and the general managers come from the same party, then this is wrong.”
And he stressed that “we should not stipulate affiliation to this or that party, and this is what we face as a negative from the negatives of the previous stage, and I am strict in this part.”
He also said, "In light of the great crises that we have gone through, I see that everyone has learned the lesson, at the beginning of the political process," stressing, "Our destiny as Iraqis, with our various components and sects, is to live together in this country, so there is no way to cancel the other." And he stressed that “the end of Saddam is a lesson for everyone in power, to look at the fate of tyranny, murder and theft, and lead the country to absurd policies.”
And he stated that “after 2003, and as a result of repression and confiscation of rights, everyone went to raise concerns about establishing rights in the constitution, and this is one of the problems referred to in the constitution.”
Al-Sudani stressed that “there is no targeting of the Sunni component under the pretext that it is part of the former regime, as it was subjected to the injustice of that regime like the rest of the Iraqis, and there are massacres committed by the regime against Sunni clans and personalities.”
He explained that “after 2003, there was a part of the Sunni component that rejected the process of change and did not believe in the political process, and with the passage of time everyone believed that change takes place through the political process itself.”
And he believed that “in most countries of the world, the position of a minister is political, and what is below the minister should be left to professionalism,” stressing that “political forces are supposed to take into account citizenship, and there are areas that must be left to professionalism and given the opportunity to work.”
Al-Sudani stressed, “Today we live in freedom of expression and the right to demonstrate and express our opinion. The prime minister, the president and the government can be criticized, and the citizen is safe.”
He stated that "in all political and security problems since 2003, what is positive is the preservation of the peaceful transfer of power, one session after another."
Al-Sudani stated, “We do not have absolute powers, and there is a separation of powers. We have judicial and parliamentary powers. All components participate in decision-making.
He stated that “before the formation of our government, there were serious political disputes, but the competition was taking place in the corridors of the Federal Court and in the texts of the constitution.”
He pointed out that "the diversity in Iraq is a factor of strength, not weakness," stressing that "we must put the interest of Iraq above all considerations, and the decisions we take concern all Iraqis."
Al-Sudani directed his admonition to the Arab countries, and pointed out that “one of the strategic mistakes of the Arabs is that they turned away from Iraq, left it for a long time and recognized that, especially after the threat of ISIS.”
And he stressed that “those who stood before the ISIS gangs were the Iraqis, and they fought on behalf of the world. Here, everyone became convinced of the need for the Arabs to return to Iraq, not the return of Iraq to the Arabs, as Iraq was and still exists. He explained, "We understand the nature of the Iraqi citizen, his concerns and fears, and therefore his priorities can be arranged," adding, "It is a great honor for me to be at the service of the people and Iraq, and it is an opportunity that God Almighty has prepared for me to offer something to our people."
And he stated that he works "17 hours a day because the Iraqis deserve to be served, as they have sacrificed everything for their country."
