The report quotes a diplomatic official in Baghdad as saying, "Two rounds of lower-level talks took place between Egyptian and Iranian officials in the capital, Baghdad, during the months of March and April of this year."
The diplomatic official added, "Both sides welcomed Iraq's efforts to mediate. It is a first step to exchange views between them, and there is a desire to move forward, but there is no progress so far.”

The report went on, that “relations deteriorated further after the Iranian government named a street in Tehran after the Egyptian officer, Khaled Islambouli, who led the assassination of former Egyptian President Anwar Sadat during a military parade he was attending in Cairo in 1981, and repeated requests from Cairo To remove his name from the street has been met with refusal.”

And the report continues, “Egypt, in contrast to Saudi Arabia, which closed its embassy in Tehran in 2016, has maintained diplomatic representation in Iran since the Islamic Revolution at the level of the Interests Section in Tehran, while Iran has maintained its embassy in Cairo with full diplomatic representation.” .
