    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
The specialist in the housing sector, Louay Al-Shammari, said today, Wednesday (September 13, 2023), that 95% of Iraqis cannot obtain a housing unit in investment complexes.
Al-Shammari told "Baghdad Today", "Iraq has reached the peak of the housing crisis and the demand for units is doubling at very high rates amid government weakness in providing large housing projects, with the exception of land distribution, which 99% is done without any services, which means a continued increase in demand."
He added, “75% of the current construction in Diyala Governorate and the rest of the governorates are in agricultural areas, that is, they are not purely owned, and there are tens of thousands of plots, some of which were distributed 30 years ago, that are still abandoned due to the lack of services there. This is the biggest mistake that is not looked into and is unfortunately left without any solutions despite the fact that It is possible, with small amounts, to revive large cities within a short period by providing services to the distributed areas.”
Al-Shammari pointed out that "95% of Iraqis cannot obtain a housing unit in investment complexes because their prices are very exaggerated and sometimes reach astronomical numbers. Despite this, the level of demand for them is high, and this leads to the question of where this money comes from amid accusations that it is (black money)." That is, its source is financial corruption in institutions and departments of many people.”
He continued, "The housing crisis cannot be solved without strict controls in terms of creating a balance between 5-star complexes and low-cost complexes, and for the government to have a major role through its companies in building residential homes under the name of cost, in addition to adopting the principle of serviced lands in distribution because it will address "Half the problem is in the medium term."
The housing crisis is one of the biggest crises that the country has faced since 2003, while corruption constitutes one of the most serious difficulties facing the housing file, at a time when the government is unable to recover the file and deal with it professionally.
