{Local: Al-Furat News} Head of the Supreme Judicial Council, Faiq Zaidan, stressed today, Tuesday, the importance of respecting and implementing the agreements concluded between Iraq and Kuwait in accordance with the constitutional contexts.
The judiciary media stated in a statement received by {Al-Furat News}, that “the latter received Tariq Al-Faraj, the ambassador of the State of Kuwait to Iraq, to discuss cooperation between the two countries in the judicial field, while the President of the Council stressed during the meeting Iraq’s respect for the State of Kuwait in its history, present and future, and the independence of the State of Kuwait through historical stages.” "different".
While he stressed the depth of the relationship between the two brotherly peoples and Iraq’s appreciation for the honorable positions of the State of Kuwait in helping Iraq get rid of the dictatorial regime.
"The President of the Council stressed the importance of respecting and implementing the agreements and treaties concluded between Iraq and Kuwait in accordance with the constitutional and legal contexts and respecting the implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions."
On September 4, the Federal Supreme Court decided that the Khor Abdullah Agreement, which regulates maritime navigation in the waterway separating Iraq and Kuwait, is unconstitutional.
The court justified its decision “in violation of the provisions of Article (61/Fourth) of the Constitution of the Republic of Iraq, which stipulates that the process of ratifying international treaties and agreements is regulated by a law enacted by a two-thirds majority of the members of the House of Representatives.”
It is noteworthy that in 2012, the House of Representatives ratified the border agreement to officially enter into force.
The agreement stipulates that the waters of Khor Abdullah will be divided equally between the two countries, based on United Nations Security Council Resolution 833 issued in 1993, which redrawn the borders in the wake of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait.
