Maysan: (Xinhua)
Chinese energy companies have achieved the first achievement of its kind in Iraq to treat gas associated with oil, stop its burning, benefit from it economically, achieve green development, preserve the environment, and improve the lives of citizens.
PetroChina and the China Petroleum Engineering and Construction Corporation (CPECC) recently completed the mechanical work for the gas processing station at the Halfaya oil project in Maysan Governorate, southern Iraq.
Fang Jiazhong, head of the Halfaya project in PetroChina, told Xinhua, “The Halfaya oil field is the first project in which a natural gas processing plant is built to take full advantage of the gas produced during oil extraction, among all oil field projects in Iraq.” ".
The area of the Halfaya field is 288 square kilometers, and it contains more than 300 oil wells, three central processing units for crude oil, two electricity generation plants, another for water treatment, a civil airport, office and living buildings, and a gas processing plant.
Fang added, "After the gas processing plant is put into operation, the problem of energy shortage will be greatly solved, the environment and climate will be protected, other oil and gas products will be produced, and outstanding economic value will be created," describing the project as a model of China-Iraq cooperation within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative.
As an operator of the Halfaya oil field, which has an annual production capacity of 20 million tons, since 2019, PetroChina has invested more than a billion dollars to build a gas processing plant, which will convert associated gas into usable natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, sulfur, and others, and will stop its combustion and reduce waste and carbon emissions and protect the environment.
The China Petroleum Engineering and Construction Company (CPECC) designed and built the gas processing station in the Halfaya field and used the latest Chinese technology and equipment.
Director General of the company's Middle East branch and head of the Halfaya gas processing plant project, Jiang Feng, told Xinhua, "(CPECC) bears the task of designing, marketing, building, trial operation and care for the Halfaya gas processing plant project."
He added, "During the construction of the project, we chose the best team from our company, overcame various major difficulties, used the latest Chinese technology and equipment, and provided a large number of job opportunities for Iraqis," stressing that after operating the project, it will continue to create social and economic value to improve people's livelihood. The function of the gas processing plant is to collect and process associated gas and condensate from three central processing units for crude oil in the Halfaya field.
The project receives great attention from the Iraqi government, as it protects the environment, creates economic benefits, and improves the people’s livelihood, stressing that it has taken several measures to invest in the gas associated with oil extraction, stop the waste of this important wealth, and provide an important source for operating power plants and reducing environmental pollution.
The Undersecretary of the Iraqi Ministry of Oil, Ali Maaraj, said while attending the ceremony to complete the mechanical works, “This project is one of the main projects to eliminate gas flaring, treat it, and benefit from it, and it is considered the first step among subsequent steps that will follow in the near future.” Maaraj added to ((Xinhua)) that "Chinese companies are among the specialized international oil companies that were focused on by the sector leadership at the Ministry of Oil, and this was represented by referring a number of fields in the first, second and third licensing rounds to them."
The Iraqi official expected "an effective contribution by Chinese companies to the fifth and sixth licensing rounds in the future," and said that "even at the level of the refinery industry, there is an Al-Faw refinery in which a Chinese company is working seriously to invest."
Maaraj stressed that "Chinese companies have registered a distinguished presence in Iraq on more than one level, which will reflect positively on the level of diplomatic and political relations between the two countries."
In turn, Maysan Governor Ali Douai told Xinhua that "among the priorities of the government program is the gas industry and the exploitation of associated gas, given that there were previously only limited steps in this field." He considered that "the opening of this important project is a qualitative leap on several levels, including providing support for electricity production, as it will equip the Amara Gas Station and the Maysan Investment Station with gas, which will increase support and equip the Maysan Station with additional quantities of electrical energy."
He pointed out the importance of this step from another aspect related to environmental improvement, given that gas was previously burned, which affected the environment in general, “but after the completion of this station, five torches will be cancelled,” stressing the importance of this towards improving the environment in the governorate.
It is expected that the station, after its operation, will help reduce a huge amount of sulfur dioxide emissions, and transport the processed dry gas to the Amara and Maysan electricity generation stations by 5 billion kilowatt-hours annually, in addition to increasing economic income by selling condensates and sulfur.
Iraqi engineer Nashat Dhia (31 years old), a graduate of the College of Engineering at Al-Mustansiriya University, who has been working with CPECC for more than six years, confirmed that he gained good experience from the Chinese cadres, especially the managers, thanks to the assistance and education they provided to him and his colleagues in this matter. The project.
Nashaat, who rose from quality engineer to responsible for all contracting between local Iraqi companies and the Chinese company, said that his financial situation has improved greatly, noting that he went through a beautiful moment in his life when he met his wife while working for the company.
He continued, "Since 2003 until now, the gas extracted from oil fields has been burned and not benefited from. Now the company (CPECC) has completed the gas station treatment project. This project will exploit the burned gas and provide an economic addition to the country and improve the economy."
He explained that most electrical stations operate on gas, and despite this, Iraq does not exploit it and imports it from neighboring countries, adding, "We thank CPECC for this project, which will improve the economy and help provide electricity and other oil derivatives." He concluded, "This burning gas can cause diseases and cancers, so exploiting it will improve the environment and preserve people's health."
