Baghdad/Al-Masala: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani discussed developments in relations between Turkey and Iraq and ways to enhance them in various fields, especially the fight against terrorism, in addition to regional issues, developments in the Middle East, and international issues of common interest.
Diplomatic sources said that the talks between Erdogan and Al-Sudani focused largely on cooperation between the two countries in the field of combating terrorism and stopping the activities of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, which is classified as a terrorist organization by Turkey and banned by Iraq.
The sources added that Erdogan stressed to Al-Sudani the importance of cooperation between the two countries in confronting the threat of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, pointing to the terrorist suicide attack claimed by the party on the headquarters of the Tusas Company in Ankara, which left 5 dead and 22 injured, stressing that the terrorist activity of the party does not pose a threat to Turkey alone, but to Iraq, Syria and Iran as well.
On the eve of Al-Sudani's arrival in Istanbul, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with Iraqi National Security Advisor Qasim Al-Araji at the Turkish Foreign Ministry headquarters in Ankara on Thursday, where they discussed security cooperation between the two countries and joint cooperation in confronting terrorism and the threat of the Kurdistan Workers' Party.
Türkiye launched an air operation in northern Iraq on Wednesday, hours after the terrorist attack on the headquarters of Tusas.
The Turkish Defense Ministry said in a statement on Friday that Turkish forces killed four PKK members as part of their ongoing strikes under Operation Claw-Lock, which targets the party's bases and members in northern Iraq.
Ministry spokesman Zeki Akturk said in a press briefing on Thursday that 198 terrorists were eliminated in operations carried out by its forces over the past week, including in northern Iraq and Syria over the course of a week, following the terrorist attack on Tusas.
During the fourth meeting of the Joint Security Mechanism, held in Ankara on August 15, Turkey and Iraq agreed to establish a joint security coordination center in Baghdad and a training and cooperation center in the Bashiqa camp, which was used as a Turkish base in northern Iraq to combat terrorism and the activities of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
The Iraqi National Security Council declared the PKK a banned organization, coinciding with a visit by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Iraq on April 22.

Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler had previously announced that Turkish forces would conclude Operation Claw-Lock, which began in April 2022, in November, but the party's latest attack could change Turkey's position, according to sources.
The sources continued to Asharq Al-Awsat that the discussions between Erdogan and Al-Sudani touched on Israel expanding its attacks from Gaza to Lebanon and Syria and the danger this poses to the stability and security of the region, and the necessity of cooperation to achieve a ceasefire to prevent the expansion of the scope of Israeli aggression in the region.
The sources indicated that the talks also touched on efforts to normalize relations between Turkey and Syria and the role played by Baghdad in resuming the talks and holding a meeting between Erdogan and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, which Ankara welcomes.
In a related context, the Quadripartite Ministerial Council, which includes the Ministers of Transport, Communications and Infrastructure of Iraq, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, approved the establishment of a coordinating entity to jointly manage the work of the Development Road Project.
The final statement of the second quadripartite meeting on the Development Road Project, which was held in Baghdad on Thursday, stated that the coordinating entity was approved to manage the work of the Development Road Project, and to activate the joint cooperation necessary to implement all the work related to the project, including studies and technical and engineering consultations to complete the project requirements.
The statement stressed the need to work on achieving joint cooperation between the member states, with the aim of integrating transportation networks and providing effective and economic alternatives for transporting goods and passengers. It urged the member states to exchange information, experiences and lessons learned, with the aim of supporting the achievement of the objectives of the Development Road Project.
The meeting was attended by Iraqi Minister of Transport Razzaq Muhaibis, Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Oraloglu, UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Suhail Mohammed Al Mazrouei, and Qatari Minister of Transport Jassim bin Saif Al Sulaiti.
On April 22, Turkey, Iraq, Qatar and the UAE signed a four-way memorandum of understanding in Baghdad for cooperation on the Development Road project, which is a land and railway road extending from Iraq to Turkey and its ports, with a length of 1,200 kilometers inside Iraq, and aims to transport goods between Europe and the Gulf countries.
