    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
The Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Education Committee, Adel Al-Rikabi, ruled out today, Friday, November 1, 2024, the existence of a relationship between poverty and unemployment due to the educational situation in Iraq, stressing the "need to support the education sector with larger allocations in the financial budget."
Al-Rikabi told Baghdad Today, "The education sector is one of the sectors that is linked to a group of other sectors in the country, and it is not possible to link all the problems to the educational situation in Iraq, and I believe this is not true. It may be one of the reasons, but it is not all of the reasons. It is not reasonable to link the spread of poverty, unemployment, and administrative and financial corruption to an ineffective educational system. It has nothing to do with it and is a different issue."
He pointed out that "the educational system in Iraq includes private education stipulated by the constitution, as well as private education, in addition to the government sector," indicating that "education in Iraq - unfortunately - there is a lack of interest and support in the government budget directed to the education sector, which is allocated 1.5% of the annual budget, as a result of which many Iraqi universities may find their buildings dilapidated and perhaps some of them caravans."
Al-Rikabi stressed that "education in Iraq needs great attention from the government and the House of Representatives at the time of approving the budget, as we have two sectors: higher education and scientific research."
He pointed out that "countries not far from Iraq and located in the Middle East allocate large budgets reaching 10-15% of the annual budget for the entire country to the field of scientific research only, to research centers and to the education sector in addition to the education sector, and unfortunately this does not exist now in Iraq."
He stressed that "the lack of support is reflected in the level of education, scientific research, infrastructure, laboratories and educational capabilities in general."
Al-Rikabi said, “Poverty has its causes, and education may be one of its causes, but unemployment also has its causes. On the contrary, today we have armies and groups of graduates, meaning that the outputs of education have not found job opportunities yet. The issue is different, and the defect exists in many sectors, including education, due to the lack of support.”
