    Mayor of Baghdad, Ammar Musa Kazem, announced the launch of the first investment project to treat waste and generate electrical energy from it in the capital, Baghdad.
    Kazem said in a press conference, according to a statement by the Municipality of Baghdad, “Today an environmental and strategic project is announced that represents urgent importance to the Municipality of Baghdad, which it has sought for many years to achieve. It is a project to treat waste and produce electrical energy, and it is the result of joint efforts between the Municipality of Baghdad, the National Investment Authority, and the Ministries of Electricity.” and the environment.”
    Kazem pointed out, “Several committees have been formed for the purpose of studying the project and preparing the correct scientific foundations and modern techniques for managing this file.”
    He added, "Thanks to the directives and support of the Prime Minister, Cabinet Resolution No. (23490) of 2023 was obtained, which is a decision issued for the first time to allocate lands for the implementation of this project, one on the Karkh side and the other on the Rusafa side."
    He stated, “The waste management file is one of the important files for the Baghdad Municipality, which has not witnessed any qualitative change throughout the previous years, and today, after the launch of this project, to serve the city of Baghdad with a population of approximately 9 million people, with a population growth rate of 2.5 per year, and a daily waste secretion rate of 9,500 tons, which... It requires dealing with it through sustainable environmental projects to preserve the capital’s environment.”
    He continued: "We celebrate the launch of the first phase of the project as an investment opportunity next to Al-Rusafa in the Nahrawan area, starting with 3,000 tons of waste per day."
    For his part, Chairman of the Investment Authority, Haider Makiya, confirmed that “this project has been prepared with special standards for its implementation in accordance with the fourth generation projects, which are the most modern in the world, using scientific methods that ensure the absence of harmful emissions, odors, and polluting gases to ensure the safety of the environment.”
