Shafaq News/ The Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources revealed, on Monday, the trend towards investing in wastewater and treating it for use in cultivating the “green belt” around cities to combat desertification.

Minister of Resources Aoun Dhiab told Shafaq News Agency, “Improving the climate depends on expanding and securing green spaces in cities and their surroundings, protecting the environment and reducing temperatures, and this is achieved through the use of modern technologies to combat desertification and climate change.”

He stated that "the Ministry of Water Resources depends on securing water through the establishment of agricultural cities, as well as planting green belts and trees in a number of Iraqi cities and regions."

He pointed out that "water provision will be through wells in places where groundwater is available, in addition to reusing technologies in treating wastewater and investing it in agriculture."

The minister confirmed, "We had an experience in Karbala Governorate, with coordination and support from the Abbasid Shrine, to create a green belt in the vicinity of the city. We were able to allocate an amount of wastewater and use it in the green belt, and we are in the process of repeating this experience in other places."

It should be noted that calls to treat wastewater and use it in agriculture were launched several years ago before Iraq entered a dangerous phase of drought, which worsened in the last three years and reached an unprecedented stage, as the southern marshes and the Tigris and Euphrates rivers dried up in some of the areas through which they pass.
