Representative Hassan Al-Jubouri confirmed today, Monday (November 20, 2023), that choosing the speaker of the new Iraqi Parliament is an internal matter and that countries have no right to interfere in this matter.
Al-Jubouri said, “Choosing the new speaker of parliament is one of the tasks of the Sunni political blocs, as they are authorized to resolve this issue as it is their constitutional entitlement, and they are still in the dialogue stage.”
He stated, “This is an Iraqi issue, and we certainly do not allow any external party to interfere in resolving this issue,” considering that “Sunni political forces are capable of resolving this issue in the coming days, especially as there is a positive atmosphere taking place during the dialogues, and we do not need any external commandments.”
The House of Representatives announced the election of a replacement for Muhammad Al-Halbousi in its special session next Wednesday (November 22, 2023).
Earlier, the Bayraq Al-Khair bloc confirmed that there are 6 names proposed as alternatives to Muhammad Al-Halbousi for the presidency of the House of Representatives, indicating that two names are the most likely to hold the position and the list of candidates will be decided within 48 hours.
The Secretary-General of Bayraq Al-Khair, Muhammad Al-Khalidi, said in an interview, “The meetings of the Sunni forces have been continuing for 72 hours in order to resolve the compass of their directions, especially after the Federal Court’s decision to terminate the membership of the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Muhammad Al-Halbousi,” pointing out that “the decision is decisive and has become in accordance with the legal opinion.” .
He added, “So far, there are 6 names proposed by the Sunni forces as candidates for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives,” adding: “But the most fortunate ones so far are Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani and Salem Al-Issawi, according to preliminary readings.”
He pointed out that “there are 3 important meetings that will be held during the next 48 hours in order to reduce the list of candidates to two and present it in the first session of the House of Representatives in accordance with the legal contexts that outlined the features of the selection mechanisms after the position becomes vacant.”
He pointed out that “the Sunni forces are in agreement regarding accelerating the determination of their options and seeking to present a consensus candidate to the House of Representatives, and this matter can happen through the results of the meetings.”
The Federal Supreme Court had terminated Muhammad al-Halbousi’s membership in the Iraqi parliament on charges of forging the resignation of former MP Laith al-Dulaimi, which the court considered to be a violation of the basic conditions that a representative must enjoy and the sanctity of popular representation in Parliament.
