    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Sunday (December 24, 2023), Representative Hussein Habib outlined his reservations regarding the December 18 elections, while indicating that the United States of America is obligated to deal with its results impartially.
Habib told "Baghdad Today", "The elections on December 18 express popular will, as does the boycott. Both are democratic practices, although the participation rates are low, but they remain legitimate even if the participation rates are 10% because there is no law that determines the participation rate to determine its paths." To be legitimate or not, but on the other hand, we specify our reservations regarding many of the practices that took place on election day, including buying debts, unfair competition, and exploiting state resources.”
He added, "The provincial councils are the product of elections, and the citizen is the main player in determining the compass of the winners, and the participation rates do not affect their legitimacy. In conclusion, America is the one who changed the regime and it is the one who laid the foundations of the constitution that approved the elections, and Iraq is a sovereign country. This means that the American administration is obligated to deal impartially." With its results, despite our reservations about many individuals and parties, they are ultimately the results of the ballot boxes.”
Last Tuesday evening, the results of the local elections in Iraq, which were held on Monday (December 18, 2023), were announced. These are the third elections of their kind in Iraq since the American occupation in 2003.
Preliminary data presented by the head and members of the High Elections Commission, Omar Ahmed, during a press conference in Baghdad, last Tuesday evening, showed that the main forces and parties in the country obtained a majority in the seats in the provincial councils, by a difference in the number of seats achieved by each party and political coalition.
The Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, Omar Ahmed, announced in the press conference that “the announced results constitute 94.4% of the total results,” stressing that the Commission succeeded in implementing the constitutional right to hold governorate council elections.
The elected local councils in Iraq are responsible for selecting the governor and the governorate’s executive officials, and have the powers of dismissal and appointment, in addition to approving the project plan in accordance with the financial budget allocated to the governorate by the central government in Baghdad, in accordance with the provisions of the Iraqi constitution.
